This is what one of our students had to say about her birth recently:
A friend recommended hypnobirthing to me when I was pregnant with my first baby, I stupidly dismissed the idea with no real reason. I think I was too worried about having to learn something new.
When I fell pregnant with my second baby, I knew I wanted to try hypnobirthing. I read some books which introduced the theory but they lacked useful information or practical advice, then I was lucky enough to find the Calm Birth School.
The video modules and mp3s were invaluable and put me in such a positive mindset about birth, even excited. I loved how much support was offered throughout, which helped me to feel calm and confident about the birth of my baby.
As the time approached, I could feel my body preparing for birth. Every twinge and ache made me excited, every time I felt a light cramp, I closed my eyes and welcomed more. The build up, as with my first baby was a few days. I felt impatient but enjoyed the visualization practice it gave me.
We were at the hospital for a routine appointment when my waters broke, although we had planned for a homebirth, I knew when we left the house that morning that my baby was coming. I’m so glad we packed a hospital bag!
At the time my waters broke I had no other obvious signs that baby was coming, so my partner and I were told to take a 2 hour walk to stimulate labour. We only made it to the cafe before my surges began, they were strong and regular. I felt so excited
and welcomed each one using my CBS breathing techniques. My partner suggested we go to the birth centre but I was convinced we should keep walking as advised. He was right! After another 2 minutes, we made our way to the birth centre!
The midwife was so friendly and made us feel 100% relaxed. She fully supported our hypnobirthing techniques, stayed silent unless we spoke to her and pretty much left us to it.
I got into the birth pool and at once my visualisations were so believable. I really felt I was on that beach in the Maldives. I was snorkelling in the shallows, the water was swaying my body in the calm waves, I felt the heat of the sun on my back and the soft sand on my tummy. The surges became so powerful, it was hard to stay focused and i could not have without all the practice.
The birth pool really worked with my visualisations of being in water, I was so convinced that I was quite surprised when i felt a strong pressure down below. I’d almost forgotten where I was!
I did loose my concentration at this point and it took a lot of energy to try to get back in the zone. My partner was amazing and kept telling me how well I was doing.
I was ready to start birthing my baby, I felt excited and talked to her, asking her to come and meet us.
I had no concept of time but my baby girl was born after 4 minutes of pushing. During the pushing stage I wasn’t hypnobirthing but I was saying the affirmations to myself. Some aloud but most in my head. They spurred me on and gave me a gentle distraction.
Once I felt the relief of my baby being born, I got to lift my little girl out of the water myself, It was the most amazing experience of my life.
I can’t believe how calm and natural I felt throughout. I could not have achieved such a peaceful, calm and relaxed birth without the calm birth school….. Oh and my birth partner!
