Hayley’s spa inspired home birth!

We have a wonderful birth story for you from Hayley:

6 days before my due date our little Huxley Isaac decided to come into the world! My waters broke at 11.30 Sunday night where I called out our midwife to check me. She suggested trying going back to bed and said it could be a while before anything happened. I’d been having really strong Braxton hicks for a week. I managed to doze off until about 4.30am then decided to get up for a bit. My surges were mild and 10 minutes apart so I called my mum at 5.30 am to come over to help get our 4 year old to school.apart so I called my mum at 5.30am to come over to help get our 4 year old to school.

I then spent the next few hours trying to doze off, walking around the house, having small snacks all the while welcoming the surges. I found walking and standing up for them was the only way. We had lavender burning, candles and ‘plinky plonk’ music as my other half calls it! It was super relaxing my mum felt as though she was in a spa!

I did some walking to the end of the garden and back again as I didn’t want to be far from the house but the surges when timing them (which wasn’t all the time) were ranging from 4 minutes apart and then back to 8/9. We called the midwives again at 11.30am who said just relax, don’t do anything let your body do its thing and if you want have a bath.

They did mention that they thought being second baby it would’ve been a bit further along but no concern. However I did say I had a bit of an achy down below but not a pushing feeling which confused them so she told me to have a feel myself in the bath to see if I could feel anything. After getting in the bath and feeling what I thought might’ve been the head and 3 close strong surges later the midwives luckily were already on route.

The next couple of hours out of the bath went so fast- I had the affirmations on while I rocked holding onto my partner or mum, I found aaahhhing sometimes on the out breath of wave breathing helped. The pool was only just filled in time- I got in at 3.18 and only 3 surges later at 3.34 he was here!

I am so thrilled with our calm positive birth experience which at times towards the end although was definitely uncomfortable was in a way euphoric. This birth was 16 hours start to finish compared with 30 hours my first, and only 3 surges where I let go and birthed him compared with 2 and half hours of forced pushing with my 1st! We were in the comfort of our home and tucked up in bed within an hour!

Thank you to The Calm Birth School for everything I’ve learnt, changing mine, my mums and hopefully others perception of birth and the support of everyone on this group xx
