25 Hours Of Labor With 5 Hours Of Pushing

This week’s birth story comes from Chelsea who gave birth to Palmer Noelle after attending Hypnobirthing sessions with Katie Daibess of Your Birth and Becoming, covering Troy, Michigan in the USA.

Thank you for sharing this gorgeous story with us!

“Palmer Noelle was born on April 16, 2022 at 7:29 PM. I was induced on April 15th at 42 weeks gestation. I was really hoping to go into spontaneous labor, however, my midwives group did not recommend continuing the pregnancy past 42 weeks.

I went to the hospital on Friday morning (4/15) for an induction. When I arrived, they checked my cervix for the first time ever, and I was dilated to 1 cm. We discussed induction options and agreed that a foley balloon was the best way to move forward.
My midwife had difficulty placing the foley balloon, however, she was able to place it successfully on the fourth try (ouch!).

A few hours went by, and the balloon was working, thankfully. Around 10 pm, my water broke on its own when I got up to go to the bathroom.

I requested the epidural after my water broke, knowing that my contractions would likely start to become more painful and intense. The anaesthesiologist came in to place the epidural around 11 pm, which went very smoothly. I was able to get some rest on and off that night.

I woke up in the morning and tried different positions to help my pelvis open up in preparation for pushing. That afternoon (Saturday 4/16), I was finally dilated to 10 cm, so I began to do some practice pushes at 2:30 pm. I pushed for about 5 hours—which now seems so crazy. In the moment, though, I went into another world and just got it done. I played music and listened to birth affirmations to help me through. Even though I was hooked up to the epidural, I was able to move my legs very easily so I tried several positions for pushing.

My midwife followed my birth preferences as best as she could. She shut off the monitor that showed my contractions so that I could listen to my body and feel when to push without any coaching. I was pushing about 4 times per contraction- working so hard to get this girl out.

At 7:29 pm, after about 25 hours of labor with 5 hours of pushing, Palmer was born. Giving birth was the most amazing, intense experience of my life. Women are incredible!”
