Hi, I’m Lizzy and proud owner of the Calm Mamma Birth School in Birmingham.
I have 3 beautiful children of my own and very passionate about birth. After losing my first baby, April, at 22 weeks, having to go through a gruelling 16 hour labour to give birth after being induced, I found getting pregnant again was actually terrifying at the time. Constantly thinking about getting beyond 22 weeks, then having the memory of the lengthy and painful labour I endured replaying in my mind wasn’t how I wanted to feel about being pregnant.
However, I went on to have, in my view, a beautiful and empowering birth of my eldest son, Rory followed 2 and a bit years later by Reggie who’s birth was identical in both time of day, length of labour and style of arrival. I wanted to tell the world about my experiences, but felt other moms were negative in their mindset only focussing on the pain aspect and what didn’t go well for them. They didn’t consider the empowerment that birth can bring, so I felt like I would be perceived as just bragging. I wasn’t. I wanted to help people achieve the same experience.
My third child, Ayda, I was going for perfection. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen as smoothly as I originally wanted. However, I was still able to remain calm and so thankful for the safe arrival of another beautiful baby.
Having worked in a school for over 10 years, I decided it was time for a change and start something new in a subject I am passionate about, which is the birthing world. I want to help expectant mothers and identified a lack of antenatal classes in my area both privately and with the NHS. There’s generally a lack of time and support available to prepare you for birth.
Training with the Calm Birth School, I’ve not only learnt so much about birth, the body and the brain, but more so about your rights and available choices you have during pregnancy and labour that I had no idea about, and I’ve told you about 4 pregnancies there!
The Calm Birth Techniques are not only useful during pregnancy and birth, but also during everyday life. I have used the techniques recently to get me through some eye surgery. It has also helped me be a calmer mamma at home as motherhood is not easy – it’s an emotional rollercoaster!
