Hello! I am Wendy and despite my British name I am from Italy.
My father chose Wendy because he loves Peter Pan, and in particular he liked the idea of this girl that decided to leave home to be a mum for the lost boys. In a way, I honoured my name, as I am now a midwife and I’ve welcomed lots of babies into this world and I always feel a bond with all of them.
I have been working in the birth field since 2004, originally in Italy then I moved to the UAE in 2011 with the idea to go to Australia but the Middle East fascinated us so much we decided to stay. Currently I am working in Dubai, where I practice as a Midwife Educator and Lactation Consultant IBCLC in a private hospital in the city.
In 2015 something really big happened to me, I had my baby boy. Being a midwife and being pregnant was a mix of emotions and feelings. Plus my pregnancy was a little complicated as my boy tried to come out quite early and as I was abroad and far from family and friends it was quite hard. The best gift I gave to myself at that time was to go to a Hypnobirthing class to prepare for birth.
I ended up being induced at 41+3 weeks and what I remember about my labour was ‘Bob Marley’ and the affirmations playing in the background. At the end, I had an emergency abdominal birth followed by bouts of depression because I had the feeling I failed to give birth, and it took me more than one year to understand there was no fault but a lot of love and courage instead.
But from that moment, my view of birth changed a lot.
As a midwife I knew it was the time to act and to learn how to help women more, it is not true “the only thing that matters at the end is a healthy baby and healthy mum”, there is so much more!
So I studied to be a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) as breastfeeding is another journey and required lots of attention, I became a VBAC supporter, a baby massage instructor (the power of touch is incredible), a Reiki Master level III, a MHFA (Mental Health First Aider) and in 2020 I had the opportunity to start my journey into hypnobirthing at The Calm Birth School.
What a year! As soon I started the class, I had Pneumonia and soon Covid spread in the region, so working full time in hospital required all my energy…but there was something else that required my energy too…I got pregnant for the second time!
I had a wonderful pregnancy and I use lots of hypnobirthing techniques to calm me down, lots of positive affirmation and breathing, how much I breath!
My daughter arrived safely in this world during the Pandemic year, landing earth-side with a fantastic VBAC in the pool, funny enough we had a playlist with mixed music and she came out with the song “No woman No cry”, so like her brother she come out listening Bob Marley.
Now I’ve completed my course to become a hypnobirthing instructor and I wish to help every women and family I will meet on this journey called life, to have a positive experience about birth and motherhood, full of love, safety, power and understanding.
Because every birth matters, every baby is a miracle.
I am also one of the authors of a fantastic book called “Birthing with heart: the birth of a mother”, it’s all about motherhood.
