All the love, Liz & The Team x
Hey!! My name is Laura and I live with my husband and 2 wonderful and wild daughters in the gorgeous seaside town of Broadstairs.
By day I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, working with a whole array of difficulties from anxiety to depression to trauma. I love my job and it’s an absolute privilege to help people when they most need it, offering the tools and techniques to support them on their road to recovery.
When I fell pregnant with my first daughter, I was lucky enough to have a fantastic pregnancy but was pretty naive to all things pregnancy and birth related. In hindsight I was totally petrified about the whole thing and decided to bury my head in the sand (which was obviously not the best way to deal with it!)
At the end of my pregnancy I was diagnosed with a fairly rare liver condition called Obsteric Cholestasis, I was told that both my unborn baby and myself were at risk if we didn’t take an induction at 37 weeks. At this time I had little idea what an induction process looked like and chose to follow my midwife and consultants advice without question. Throughout my induction I felt hopelessly out of control both physically and mentally.
When I fell pregnant for a second time, I was petrified of repeating the initial experience and when talking to others I discovered ‘hypnobirthing’. It all sounded a bit ‘fluffy’ to me, but I thought I’d give it a shot and hope for the best. As soon as I was introduced to the principles of hypnobirthing I was sold, it just makes physiological sense and much of the basics resonated with my CBT practice.
I dived right in practicing the affirmations and breathing techniques and I soon felt empowered to have a positive birth and I felt totally in control. I was weirdly excited to birth my baby and what I experienced was a calm, incredible labour.
I’m now trained as a Hypnobirthing Instructor (with the fabulous The Calm Birth School) and will be working with the fabulous ladies at Kent Hypnobirthing. I can’t wait to start supporting other women and their partners to feel less scared and confused about the options and more empowered in what can be the most incredible experience.
This isn’t about having a ‘pain free’ birth, this is about shifting a perspective of fear associated with birth and about encouraging women to think about the options available and help them decide what is best for them in order to have a positive birth experience.
